If you’re considering a platform stair lift for your home, school, or business, you may wonder about installation. How long will it take? Will there be much disruption? Are building changes needed? This guide explains what to expect at each stage.

The initial enquiry

Our sales team will ask about your access needs to ensure the right product. Photos of the intended installation area are really helpful. We need to know:

  • What is the physical obstacle preventing accessibility? For example, is it a flight of stairs, external steps, a raised terrace or a split-level floor?
  • How many steps are there on each flight of stairs?
  • What is the maximum weight you need the platform stair lift to carry
  • Is the available space narrow, is the staircase curved or straight, and are there landing platforms

With this information, our sales team will recommend the best product and provide a same-day quote.

A site survey

Every installation begins with a site survey. Level Access Lifts will visit to measure and evaluate your staircase. It’s also a chance to discuss your requirements, lift users, power supply, and whether the platform must fold away when not in use.

The survey is straightforward and usually takes no more than an hour.

Choosing the right product

Based on the survey and your requirements, we’ll recommend the most suitable platform stair lift. Incline lifts are available in several configurations, including compact options for narrow staircases. The GTLE platform stair lift comes in over thirty platform sizes, to meet the requirements of even the most challenging staircases.

Special modifications and optional extras.

For staircases with tight bends, we recommend the GTLD platform stair lift, which is designed for complex, narrow layouts. Images will be provided to show differences from the GTLE platform stair lift. If space is limited, we may suggest an additional ramp on the side of the platform for both models.

Our platform stair lifts are available in two standard grey colours. As an optional extra, you can request a bespoke RAL colour, such as white. The rail is always stainless steel.

Standard features include wireless lockable wall switches for controlled access in public settings. If desired, you can request a remote control to operate your platform stair lift as an optional extra.

Another optional extra is a folded seat. This allows users to operate the lift while seated or in a wheelchair. This option is always supplied with an additional hard-wired remote-control handset, to make it easy for the user to reach the directional buttons.

After finalising the specification and placing an order, the GTLE stairlift is typically manufactured and delivered within 6 to 8 weeks. Installation usually takes one to two days.

Installation day

Most straightforward installations can be completed in one day. Platform stair lifts are either post-mounted to existing steps or wall-mounted, so structural changes are rarely needed.

Before our engineers arrive, clear the staircase and the surrounding area so they have space to work. A standard electrical outlet is needed. The installation team will confirm power requirements in advance.

During installation, the area will be unavailable for part of the day, especially in commercial or public settings. Plan alternative access and inform users in advance.

The team works efficiently to minimise impact on the surrounding environment.

Testing and handover

After installation, engineers will test the function and safety. They’ll show you how to operate the lift and controls before handover. Additional keys or access devices are available as needed.

The entire process from survey to installation is designed to be straightforward. Most clients are pleasantly surprised by how little disruption occurs.

After installation

Level Access Lifts provides a comprehensive parts-and-labour warranty. Customers receive two preventative maintenance visits in the first 12 months. We recommend ongoing service, including two visits a year, to keep your platform stair lift in good condition.
