GTLE inclined stairlift with platform lowered to floor level, ready for wheelchair access at St Oswald's Church chancel steps

Case Study

Project

St Oswald’s Church in Rugby needed to improve access to its chancel, where two steps created a barrier for wheelchair users and those with reduced mobility. The existing arrangement of handrails and a temporary ramp was unsuitable due to the steep gradient, requiring wheelchair users to be pushed up the incline.

As part of a wider refurbishment of the Victorian building, the church wanted to create a fully inclusive environment with independent access to the chancel. Any platform lift solution needed to be unobtrusive and compact, complementing the historic interior.

Access Solution

Level Access Lifts recommended its inclined GTLE platform stairlift with an additional folding seat. The GTLE’s design flexibility enabled the church to specify a bespoke RAL colour, brown, beige, to blend with an existing oak-framed glass archway beside the steps.

With its powered folding platform and barrier arms that fold downwards, the GTLE tucks neatly away when not in use, making it ideal for the church’s layout. Installation was completed with minimal building work and little disruption to the church’s day-to-day operations.

Results

St Oswald’s Church can now offer dignified, independent access to its chancel for all members of the parish and visiting guests. The carefully matched finish allows the platform stairlift to merge with the surrounding woodwork, providing an aesthetically pleasing solution that sits comfortably within the historic setting.
